A warm congratulations to everyone. We were very much fascinated with the great show you have. The singers sing like angels in heaven. The dancers dance like floating clouds in the sky. I also like the narrator whom he delivered his lines as clear as the water of the Nile River. We observed that the main characters wore elegant costumes and with great voices.

We would like to congratulate all those who did the props and lighting during the show. They were excellent.

In this musical show Buddha taught the people to forget selfishness and work for the common good....Siddhartha left his earthly wealth, wife, and family to seek truth to overcome world suffering.

The show taught us much lessons how to be simple, selfless and more sensitive to the needs of everyone.

Buddhist Light International Association (BLIA) Cebu Chapter, the producer’s of SIDDHARTHA: A Musical Journey to Enlightenment, is holding open auditions on two consecutive Saturdays, November 22 and 29, 2008, at the Chu’un Temple, V. Rama, Cebu City, for performing artists ages 7- 40 years old, willing to become part ot the musical’s scheduled shows during the summer of 2009.

FREE Registration is accepted only between 2pm and 4pm with auditions starting at 2:30pm until all applicants are entertained. Interested parties may download application form from http:// bliacebu.multiply.com and submit the form upon registration. The applicants should prepare a 2-minute Broadway musical song number, a 2-minute Broadway musical dance number, a CD of their audio materials and must be dressed up in workout or dance attire.

The BLIA Officers headed by President Susan Tantiansu, VP External Ben Chua and VP Education Erwin Go together with the creative team of the musical composed of Cebu’s well-respected professional artists, Art Director Walfrey Mercado, dance director Marijo Cypril Jamora, musical director Jude Gitamondoc, production manager Michelle Simtoco and artistic director Daisy Ba-ad, have outlined different projects that could be undertaken to pave the way for building a world class performing group in Cebu starting with the Siddhartha performers. A long term goal is to eventually establish a performing arts center dedicated to offering scholarship grants to the talented yet underprivileged artists in Cebu as a way of contributing to the culture and arts program of the city.

We were so privileged to be made up by Taiwan's prestigious make-up artists. All the while, we were thinking how we could communicate with them and how it would be so hard for all of us because of language barriers. But, we shared and used one of the most common and effective means of communication - communication with the heart. :D

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I am Darren Romano. I'm 21 years old from Talisay City, Cebu. I study at Cebu Doctor's University taking up Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I am currently on my final year in the college and will be graduating this coming March 2009.

2. What made you decide to audition for Siddhartha?

Well, I didn't know of Siddhartha until my friend, Antoinette Gorgonio told me about this musical. And because of my previous experience in theatre which is Jesus Christ Superstar, I have grown to love the theatre business. And I love to sing, dance, and act so I decided to join and audition.

3. How did you feel when you were chosen for your role?

a. Prophet Assita - at first when I found out that I have been chosen for the role of Assita, I thought "oh great, just what I need, an old man for me...", but then as I continued learning about the musical and the character itself, I understood the story as well as role that Assita played in shaping Siddhartha's life and I got a sense of connection with the character given to me.

b. King Suddhodana - being given this role came as a complete shock to me. I have always admired Zennith, who played the role of King. I on the other hand feared this role because it was extremely hard for me to reach the vocal requirement for the character's songs since I'm a Baritone/ Tenor 2. And Zennith was a tenor 1. When Zennith failed to show up for the next practice for our CCP show, I was one of the few singers given the chance to audition for the role.

4. Have you had any previous experience with musical theatre?

- Yes I have, I played as the infamous homosexual King Herod in the protestant musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar : The Rock Opera " which was shown last December 2006

Levin Inez as Little Siddhartha

1. Tell us something about yourself.

My name is Levin Evardo Inez. I was born on January 6, 1996. We are six in the family and I’m the youngest of four siblings. I’m currently studying at Don Bosco Technology Center in Punta Princesa, Cebu City. I am interested in playing soccer and I’m a varsity at DB. Aside from sports, I also like singing.

2. What made you decide to audition for Siddhartha?

I decided to audition for Siddhartha because I wanted to experience what musical theatre is really about since it was new to me way back then.

I would also like to thank Sir Jude because he was the one who personally got me from school and brought me to Ms. Daisy’s house on the day of the audition.

3. How did you feel when you were chosen to be little Siddhartha?

I was really excited and glad because it was my first musical and I had a big role already.

4. Have you had any previous experience with musical theatre?

Siddhartha was my first musical. I had joined a play before but not a musical play.

Les Paul Pineda as One of the Five Attendants

1. Tell us something about yourself.

My name is Les Paul Pineda. As a son of a musician, I got the inheritance of music. Basically, I love music. Without music to me is like eating a burger without a patty….sucks right? Anyway, I’m 19 years old and studying as an Industrial Engineer in Don Bosco Technology Center. Besides formulating and solving mathematical problems and making basic furniture, I sing…I also dance but not as much as I sing…I also act but no as much as I dance. Music has been a huge part of my life. I may not be a recording artist or a celebrity but music is my life.

2. What made you decide to audition for Siddhartha?

Actually a friend of mine, Jingle, who is also part of the cast, invited me to audition for the play. Since Siddhartha was a musical play, I got really excited.

3. How did you feel when you were chosen as one of the five attendants?

When they gave out the roles, I was really excited that I got one of the roles as Siddhartha’s attendant. It even got more exciting when the playwright said that our scene (the 5 attendants) will be comical. I’m a crazy person so I’m really into the comical side.

4. Have you had any previous experience with musical theatre?

Yes. The first musical which I joined was rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar which was composed of mostly amateurs like me. Siddhartha was the second production I joined. And I can say that I’m lucky to be in this production

Kurt Fick as Rahula

I am 12 years old and currently in 6th grade at Mount Olives Christian Academy.
I am interested in music and arts.
And I love acting!

2. Why did you audition for this play?

Actually, I first saw the play in Waterfront Pacific Ballroom which was Siddhartha's first
staging here in Cebu. Then a few months later Ms. Daisy called my mom and asked if I wanted to audition for Siddhartha as Rahula. I was really excited when my mom told me about it because watching it before made me imagined myself as one of the casts. Thankfully, they approved of me.

3. How did you feel when you were chosen to play the role of Rahula?

Overjoyed. I was really excited to go home and tell everyone that I was chosen to be the other Rahula. I'm just so thankful to the many people who have supported me with my role.

I love being Rahula! I'm very comfortable with the role and I really enjoyed every second of it.

4. Have you had any previous experience with musical theatre?

Yes , I started working with Miss Daisy in Out Of the Box Theater company when I was just 3 years old. I joined a lot of musical plays, such as "Tall Tales Kuno", "Joseph the Dreamer",
"The Whiz", "Children of Eden" and many more, which were all directed by Miss Daisy,
the best director and teacher I've ever known. She has been and always will be one of my mentors.

Getting to Know Renejane Dagala

1. Tell us something about yourself.

Im Renejane H. Dagala, 27, a professional mathematics teacher. This is my 6th year of being a teacher and DBTC (Don Bosco Technology Center) has been the second school that I have taught.

2. Why did you audition for the play?

I came to know about the play because of the musical director Mr Jude Thaddeus Gitamondoc, who told me to audition. He didn't mention that he was the scriptwriter and musical director of the said play then. I kept on refusing him for he had informed me of the audition dates and just told him that I'd be busy plus I didn't know any of the people who have also auditioned.

But my friend Johanna texted me that we will go together to audition, and so I found myself saying I'll give it a try. (We auditioned in the house of the artistic director...actually,I was really shy to audition since I can't dance gracefully...hehehe)

But then, I found myself auditioning. I guess I miss being in a production (it was already 6 years since my last production...)

3. Have you had any previous experience with musical theater?

As mentioned, I had been to two musical productions in the past 6 years. One of which was "God in Motion" which was also directed by Daisy Ba-ad, the artistic director also of Siddhartha.

4. In a word, what's it like being a Siddhartha Cast?

WONDERFUL!

Everything was just wonderful...the experience...the lessons learned...the ever loyal and supportive friends I have met along the way...everything was just so inspiring and full of gratitude and love...hehehe...

Glimpses of Rhamric Simpron

Rham joined the company during the 3rd batch of performances which brought us to Taiwan. We needed additional dancers and he fit in quite easily.

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I'm Rhamric P. Simpron, just call me "aRhms." I'm 5'10", athletic body, fair complexion. I was born on the month of July, my zodiac sign is Cancer under the year of the Tiger! I'm often described as the guy who smiles a lot. I'm a party goer and I'm a very confident person 'coz i don't care what people say as long as I'm happy and comfortable with whatever i wear, speak and do. I really love math that's why I'm taking up BSECE. I love dancing-- that's my hobby but take note: 'Dancing is not what I do but it is who I really am."

2. Why did you audition for the play?

Actually, I really didn't know that I was auditioning for a play. Hehehe It was Daryl Shane Leong who texted me that they needed dancers and so I rushed to see if I can fit in. But then when i arrived at Chu Un Temple, to my surprise Miss Daisy, Sir Jude and Miss Michelle asked me to sing. It was difficult for me because i wasn't prepared and also, singing is really my frustration. But luckily, they let me in. =)

3. Have you had any previous experience with musical theater?

I've experienced to be in plays during my high school years (like Oliver twist, Fiddler on the Roof, Romeo & Juliet, Glass Menagerie) but to be in a huge production? Siddharta is my first..

4. In a word, what's it like being a Siddhartha Cast?

1. Tell us something about yourself.

My name is Crystal Lei Cajes. I was born in Cebu, Philippines and I grew up here too. I studied at the University of San Carlos taking up Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I work as a Technical Support in 1&1 Internet Philippines and I could say that we are the number 1 web hosting company in the world.

I love going to the beach, sitting beside the shore watching the sun as it goes down, waiting for the stars and the moon to exist and listening to the sound of the waves as it splashes towards my feet. I love singing, dancing and performing on stage with my happy heart.
It's actually my passion that I cannot stop.

2. Why did you audition for the play?

I don't know. It simply happened. When I auditioned, I didn't understand what I was feeling way back. I was just so happy. My feet brought me to this musical play to learn and grow as an individual. Even though my family kept on telling me that it will bring me no good but still I continue to what I believe is right.

Even up to now I could still remember how it began and every time I think about it I get teary eyed. It resembles tiny bits of seeds which I will never forget for the rest of my life. Whenever somebody would ask me about this production, I would cry and suddenly I am at a loss for words. If I get the chance to live my life all over again, I will still spend my time with this musical for it changed my life. And perhaps When I get old I have something to look back--esp. the family I have in this production. We cry, we sing, we laugh and everything. Somewhere in the future I will share this to my grand children. I will share it to them how it was like to be in the "SIDDHARTHA MUSICAL".

3. Have you had any previous experience with musical theater?

Yes, I was in a musical theater before entitled "Jesus Christ Superstar." It was actually a rock musical.

4. In a word, what's it like to be a Siddhartha cast?

Priceless!!!

Mae Ann Araneta as Queen Maya

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I'm Mae Ann Oropesa Araneta. 29 years old, single, and an Instructor of Cebu Normal University, teaching science subjects.

2. Why did you audition for this play?

I auditioned for the Siddhartha musical play because I was invited by my close friend Rhea May Sadaya who also portrayed the role of Queen Maya in the play.

3. What did you feel when you were chosen to be Queen Maya?

I felt happy and honored because it was a rare opportunity, it would be a great exposure and a lasting experience.

4. Have you had any musical theater experience prior to this?

Yes. I played the role of Claudia in Buhing Kalbaryo, the leading lady Mayang in Milyonaryong MINI, Banoan Saka Dance Choir Performer in Toronto and Montreal, Canada,

I also played the role of a nun in the life story of St. Therese of the Child Jesus all under the direction of Al Evangelio and the late Dr. Joycelyn Melgar.

A Talk with Erwin Go

After reading the interview questions that I have given to the cast, Erwin tried to answer the questions as well. I was so amused at his answers that I asked him if I could post it here. Thankfully, he said "Yes" so here it is.

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I am Erwin Go. I work at Go Large Graphics, Inc. which is into digital print and publishing services. I am a member of BLIA because I am too old to be a member of BLIA Youth. If I am not mistaken, I am the youngest member of BLIA. :D

2. Why did you audition for this play?

I did not audition for this play. They told us (me and the BLIA members) to come to the temple because there was going to be an audition for Siddhartha. All the while, we thought that we were going to be part of the panel. So we went to the little room, thinking that we will be calling the participants one by one. To our surprise, each of us were then asked to sing?!? Most of us did not know how to sing. I do not even know any song. So ... Ms. Daisy, with her creative thinking, asked us to sing Lupang Hinirang, the Philippine National Anthem. I cannot even sing that song because I was always playing the snare drum whenever that song is sung during my high school days until my college days.

3. Have you had any previous experience with musical theater?

I think during my college days I was involved in some class play. Or was it in high school? Or elementary? I don't know. If I had theater experience, that was a loooong time ago...ago....oo. :)

4. So what role did you end up with in Siddhartha?

Of course, with what I was able to put up with, I was not offered any role. I think I am the only one who was not given a role and still insisted to be part of Siddhartha. :)

5. In a word, what's it like being a Siddhartha Cast?
Even if I am not part of the Siddhartha cast, I feel that I am part of Siddhartha cast. My involvement is very minimal. I have read the story of Siddhartha beforehand already. So Master Chueh Lin asked me to help review the early draft of the script so at least it will conform with the story from the book written by Ven. Master Hsing Yun. Mr. Jude Gitamondoc did very well in his early draft so I only have to point out a few things of the story that was left out. I wanted to help in my own little way to bring the story of Siddhartha to more people because I know there are a lot of good things that we can learn from the story.

So what's it like being a Siddhartha cast? I don't know because I am not part of the cast. All I can tell you is what's it like NOT being part of Siddhartha cast? Aside from having a lot of fun being with these 'kalug' funny, creative and talented casts, it was a lot of learning for me. I learn a lot of things related to theater, from music to lights to props to backstage preparation to practice and to coordinating all of these activities. I now appreciate all the hard work that all these people have to go through in order to put up a beautiful and successful show. For this, I bow to all the cast and crew of Siddhartha!

More importantly, I am learning a lot about Buddhism because every now and then, especially when things are not going smoothly, the masters will always give us some words of wisdom to lift everyone's spirit up . And even if things are going too smoothly, the masters will also have words of wisdom for us to avoid becoming too complacent or even become over confident. Meanwhile, someday I may learn to act so I can be part of the Siddhartha cast. Hahaha...

So after reading his answers, I continued to ask him the following questions:

6. I've heard that you are one of the officers of BLIA? What is exactly your position?

In the beginning, I was not even a member of BLIA. I just wanted to help and to get involve. After the play in Cebu, they invited me to become a member of BLIA. When I accepted the membership, they appointed me VP of Education. I think it's because they know I need to learn a lot more about Buddhism that's why I became VP-Education so I will study more. hahaha...

7. How did you feel when you were asked to be Siddhartha during the planning stage of this play?

Hmmm... I deliberately did not mention this before. But since you brought this up...actually, I am embarrassed to think that I immediately accepted the role of Siddhartha without second thought during the planning stage. I accepted the role not for being a star but with the hope that more people will know and learn from this story. Also, at that time, I thought that it was just a short skit or something.

So when told about the auditions, I really thought that we will be evaluating the other participants. After being surprised at the audition, I was handed the script to read through. And lo and behold... that's when I saw that this was a major production with a real script and singing and dancing. I tried to skim through the pages and saw that Siddhartha will be singing several songs!

After seeing this, I told our President, Ms. Susan Tantiansu, "This is a serious play that you are doing. You better find a professional actor in order not to embarrass myself and more importantly, not to embarrass BLIA." :)

Actually, it was not difficult for me to convince them of finding a real actor. Not since after they heard me sing... or rather... not sing. hahahaha...

Something about Daryl Shane Leong

Daryl joined the Siddhartha group just recently and was able to perform in Taiwan with the rest of the cast. He took on several roles from being a slave, a jester to being one of the community people.

A quiet and nice young man, he is easy to get along with. This young performer sings quite well and is one of Siddhartha's understudy.

I have been hanging out with my friends who were involved in the production in different way and back then, I was the only one who's not a Siddhartha cast. 1. Tell us something about yourself.

I am a nature lover. I love breathing the fresh air! I love going to the beach, getting tanned under the sun. I love scuba diving – oh, I just can’t take my eyes off the beautiful treasure that awaits when you dive under the sea.

Aside from those mentioned above, I also love shopping, surfing the net, reading books, singing dancing and acting.

I love entertaining other people. Being able to entertain people is my life!

2. Why did you audition for this play?

After my last performance for the theater show during college, I thought to myself, “Will there be any musical outside the school? Can I still join and showcase my talent? I wanted to improve my singing, my skills in dancing and acting. But will I still be invited for a musical or any acting career?”

A friend from a previous college musical answered it all! When I heard them talking that there will be an audition for another musical, a bell inside my head rang and a light bulb on top of my head lighted up! I could not miss this opportunity! So, I approached my friend–with a smile and tantalizing eyes and said, “Can I join?”

3. What did you feel when you were chosen as Ajnata, one of the five attendants of Prince Siddhartha?

It was after my college graduation when the results of the audition came. Unfortunately I was not part of the major cast. I felt so weak and low then. But I recall during the auditions I was very jittery and I kept thinking, "can I make it?" This was after all the very first musical outside of school. And I saw that it was a group of talented people all gathered together for this major project. I felt so small, smaller than a mushroom, which stands around tall grasses and trees.

During the first weeks of our rehearsals, the head of the production crew approached me and announced, "You will be one of the five attendants, okay? You need to practice your lines and I will be giving you scripts."

This made me very happy. At that time, I didn't know that I was part of the main cast after all. It must have helped that I never stop practicing dancing, singing and even acting.

4. Have you had any previous experience with musical theater?

I had the chance to act in front of the camera, do a little hosting during special events or occasions and dance in front of a crowd most of the time. But as for singing, I basically hated singing before. I just don’t know why- it’s not because I have the worst voice ever, but it gave me goose bumps when I would hear someone started singing- especially classical songs!

One time in school, I was absentmindedly singing a song when a friend exclaimed, "You can sing!"
"I can sing?" It didn't even occur to me that I had a good voice.
So when I was in junior year in college, a History professor invited me to audition for a musical play. I decided to give it a try! I basically didn’t have formal theater experience nor voice lessons but I tried to learn and listen to every lecture and feedback that my mentors shared to me.

To my acquaintances I am Edison , to my classmates I am Saynes, to my friends I am Jingle and to my family I am either Ging or Kinkol. And to each name that they call me I show distinct and unique characters to which I believe what actors do in theater—we can be anyone we want to be on stage. Sometimes, we are the characters we play.

Half a decade ago, I quoted: “Ten years from now, I would be a successful nurse, but I would not hold my acting career. Most probably, I would be an actor and a nurse at the same time—no kidding!” This was what I told myself back then, but I learned nursing was not for me and I assume theater is! I may have given up being a nurse but I will never give up theater.

2. Why did you decide to audition for this play?

I have always been hungry for theater. There is not a single call from companies for open auditions that I did not know of. I always wanted to audition to all of them but to certain circumstances, I was not able to.

I heard of the auditions for Siddhartha from our Theater teacher in San Carlos . An hour after I knew about it, I searched the net and thought it was the same play running in theaters abroad that the Cebuano producers are planning to stage, little did I know, it was an acquaintance who is the playwright/musical director of Siddhartha (yes, Jude and I weren’t friends yet). I was also auditioning for another play and joining both musicals would be impossible to do, but I still decided to push thru with Siddhartha, which was the right choice.

Aside from my passion for theater, I had my friends auditioning for Siddhartha which was also my drive.

3. How did you feel when you were chosen for your role as one of the attendants, a monk and even the Prophet Assita?

Whew! Thank you for the question! Hehe.

I really had fun being part of the ensemble—dancing to almost all of the numbers in the play, the excitement of memorizing the steps, the gazillion costumes I would be switching and all. When I was chosen to play as Bhadrika and as the monk, it was a challenge and a big responsibility for me to give justice to the characters.

A much bigger surprise came to me when we were to re-stage the musical in CCP. Ms. Daisy and Jude gave me the chance of auditioning for the roles Assita and the King—I was eyeing for the latter.hehe. Not getting the king’s role was quite a disappointment but it I did not allow it to pull my enthusiasm down because I have always believed that “There are no small roles, only small actors.” So instead of sulking on my disappointment, I spent time on studying my role, making a 3-D of the character and believing I was the prophet. Later, I found out, and realized it was no easy job being—it was physically and emotionally challenging! Whew!

4. Have you had any previous experience with musical theater?

I was under Michael Williams in a musical theater workshop which culminated in a musical entitled Godspell and before that I was part of a Visayan Zarzuela.

In my elementary and high school days, I was a part of several musicals in school plays (West Side Story,Southa Pacific and Beacons of Freedom) and several straight plays in college.

Bryan, as we fondly call this guy, takes part as one of the citizens of Kapilavastu. From being an old bhramin, a funny jester, a poker faced palace guard, one of the charioteers (to which he would tell me, "miss Michelle, the carriage is so heavy!" gesturing to his bony shoulders and making me laugh) to being one of the community people, he has been one of those BLIA Youth members who stuck it out and gave his best.

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I'm Alexander Bryan Go, a graduate of Bachelor Science in Information Technology. I'm currently the Vice President of Buddhist Light International Association Cebu Chapter --Youth.

I speak many languages from english to cebuano, tagalog, chinese both fukien and mandarin. I seem to have this knack for troubleshooting computers from hardware to software and love making programs using C++, Java, php and html. I am also adept in using AS400 and msql database.

And most of all, I take pride in being a cast of the musical Siddhartha.

2. Why did you audition for this play?

We joined the auditions because Master Chueh Lin and Master Ru Sin asked all the BLIA Youth members to join. And well,
I was also encouraged by someone whom I treasure very much. I still recall how we intended not do it properly but seeing one of our members trying her best, I also found myself following her example. As time flew with rehearsals going on regularly, I saw how the other BLIA youth members was starting to quit because of certain reasons; that I also found myself wanting to quit. But Erin Bulfango, one of the cast back then, encouraged me to stick it out. And I'm pretty glad I did.

3. Have you had any previous experience with musical theater?

Well actually no i don't have any experience. Siddhartha was my first musical theater experience.

4. In a word, what's it like being a Siddhartha Cast?

Blessed!

Blessed to have a new 'family' with the cast. Also, I'm truly grateful to be part of it because it build my character and gave me the chance to share to others about enlightenment.

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I am a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering but I am currently affiliated with travel – maybe because I love TRAVEL more than constructing buildings and skyscrapers! I am the eldest of FIVE. Friends call me Dhon or DhonDhon and very close friends call me DiDon. I love watching movies, and am pretty much updated with what’s currently showing and what’s showing soon. Hehehehe … I have a huge collection of DVDs and I just love watching KOREAN movies! I love spaghetti and lasagna and chocolate and hotdog and umm what else ummm.. guess those are my favorites.

They say I’m funny; well I can be humorous at times. I’m outgoing and adventurous. I love reading, surfing the net. Did I mention that I love singing, dancing and acting? Hehehehe .. I just realized that I’m over-using the word LOVE, probably because I AM a loving person.

Loyal. Understanding. More of a listener than a talker. Sure that everything happens for a reason and “there are no accidents” (Kung Fu Panda). Knows that Hate is excess baggage. Believes that Life is too beautiful to entertain negative emotions. Realized that Pain is self-inflicted if entertained too much. Convinced that Love is the greatest gift and gesture of all.

2. Why did you audition for this play?

I didn’t know that I was auditioning for a play depicting the life of Buddha. I was just informed (by Ms. Daisy) that auditions were going on at a temple in Guadalupe (Chu-un) and to give it a try. I already auditioned for another play and got a part (understudy) but tried out anyway. Eventually I backed out from the other play and stuck with Siddhartha. I am really into musicales and stage plays and would want to be part of anything good here in Cebu that was why I auditioned. I can still remember singing in front of our Musical Director and Artistic Director, “Sing Classical!!!”. I was like trembling while trying to sing Classical-ish!

3. What did you feel when you were chosen to be Channa?

“The Major Roles go to ….”, I was like “OK”. I wasn’t really eyeing on the King’s role or Little Siddhartha or Rahula or even Siddhartha so it was no biggie to me when they announced these roles. “And the Special-Minor-Role of Channa goes to… “, I was like, “Who’s Channa?”. Hehehehe ..

I didn’t know then that my role played an important effect in Prince Siddhartha’s realization and eventual enlightenment. I was pretty excited since the character was all new to me and so I get to initially make it come to life and make my own interpretation of who the character is.

4. Have you had any musical theatre experience prior to this?

I still have a picture of me wearing jumper pants and a Unicorn head-dress shouting “Help! Help! I’m stuck in mud hole!”. I can’t remember if there was singing involved because I was still in Grade 4 then. I also have a picture of me in my Grade 6 days wearing a RAT costume and I’m sure there was lip-synching involved. So yes, I had musical theatre experiences prior to Siddhartha.

1. Tell us something about yourself

I am Marie Antoinette R. Gorgonio, 22 years old and currently residing in Cebu, Philippines. I have an older brother, John Paul, who is 5 years older than me. I am a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. But as of the moment, I am having a grand time being a violin and voice teacher to kids. My favorite pastime include reading (loved books from author like Paulo Cuehlo, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, JRR Tolkien and most esp. the Bible which I read every night), walking, solving puzzles and answering Sudoko. (chuckles) I find joy in laughter and seeing people happy; more so when a person is inspired to do good because of the things that I do - singing, acting, dancing and playing music on stage and in churches. So I continue to want to learn more about these things. I love God and I offer all of my performances to Him as my way of praising Him.

2.Why did you audition for this play?

A friend told me about the Siddhartha musical and since some of my friends were auditioning, I also went along with them; and also because I love performing on stage. But it wasn't always like this. In the beginning, I love mostly doing backstage work. I was inspired with the work of the production crew --super busy communicating with directors and assisting the actors and singers--and when the show is over, they also feel a different kind of fulfillment.

3. What did you feel when you were chosen to be Princess Yasodhara?

I had mixed feelings of shock, wonder and excitement when I was chosen as one of the Princess Yasodharas. I wasn’t expecting it, hence, the shock. During the auditions I was imagining myself running from east to west, north to south, being a personal assistant to a famous singer or musician seemed to be really fun and fulfilling. Secondly, it’s wonderful because I have this chance to do something bigger than what I have ever done in the field of singing and acting. Thirdly, excitement as well because I felt that God wanted me to do something different that may somehow change the lives of others. Aside from all these, I was just so full of eagerness to learn more about my craft. I guess exploring and improvisations in life make me very much excited.

4. Have you had any musical theatre experience prior to this?

I’ve had experiences in singing, acting and dancing in school plays and minor productions. But Siddhartha Musical was my first major production. I was involved with our annual barangay road straightplay “Dalan sa Krus” when I was in high school. The story showed the life of Jesus in parallel to the modern life of people today.

A college professor discovered my skill in singing and he let me joined another school play called “Cry of the People”, depicting the life of Jose Rizal. This led me to enroll in a two-week theatre workshop by Michael Williams. Our culminating program was the “Godspell” musical.
I also participated in “Jesus Christ Superstar” and currently am involved with some choral groups in Cebu.

Polarization

The two ends of our globe are called the North Pole and the South Pole. People sometimes use the word 'polarizing' to describe a person whose character is extreme. It also describes opposites such as good and bad, wealthy and poor, large and small, right and wrong. People with extreme personalities are the most difficult to get along with because they are attached to either existence or non-existence. They either speak well or badly of something. They have no middle ground and do not understand the meaning of life on the Middle Way.

The mind also traverses between "two poles" on a daily basis. We sometimes go to heaven, and other times fall into hell. It is a hard life wandering back and forth between the two poles. When faced with setbacks, we often become depressed and pessimistic. When things are going smoothly, we are invigorated and become active and optimistic. In reality, if we are too extreme in our pursuits in life, happiness may result in sorrow. On the other hand, if we are too pessimistic, we can be so depressed that we may even want to kill ourselves.

However, life is not really that hopeless. As the saying goes, "Heaven will always leave a door open." As long as we can think further, change direction, take a different position, get into another frame of mind, and look at things from another angle, anything can turn around. The opportunity to turn over a new leaf is always there for us.

Polarization is life or in our way of thinking is difficult because it means either the freezing color of the two Poles or the sweltering heat of the Equator. A life of hardship is too cold and passionless, and lacks strengths; while a life of pleasure is too hot, and leaves us lost. Therefore, Buddhism advocates the Middle Way of life.

In the Buddha's time, there was a musician names Sronakotivimsa. He became a monk and asked the Buddha how to cultivate himself. The Buddha asked what his profession had been, and he replied that he had been a musician.

The Buddha asked, "What happens when you play a string instrument and the strings are too tight?"

Sronakotivimsa replied, "The strings break!"

The Buddha then asked, "What if the strings are too loose?"

He answered, "They won't make any sound?"

The Buddha explained, "Cultivation is the same, If we become too tight, we will be stressed. When we are too loose, we will be listless and lazy. In seeking the appropriate and middle way, music will flow easily."

People today tend to go to extremes. They want to be the most attractive, eat the best foods, wear the latest fashion, and be friends with the best. Anything less that "the best" cannot be accepted. People who are extreme fail to appreciate the meaning of the Middle Way, and life loses its objectivity for them.

The Buddha practiced asceticism in the snowy mountains for six years. Living an inhuman life, he ate only sesame grains as food and meditated until birds built nests on his head. He finally realized that the practice of such extreme suffering only increased troubles and wore out the body and the mind. Thus, he gave up asceticism and crossed the Nilajan River. After receiving an offering of goat's milk from a shepherd girl, he recovered his strength. As he sat under the bodhi tree, he contemplated, "This mind should not be attached to either existence or non-existenc." As he eradicated the two extremes, he attained perfect enlightenment, gazing at the stars on the evening o fthe ight day of the twelfth lunar month, at the age of 31.

Therefore, if you have an extreme personality, do change it and take the Middle Way!

2. Why did you decide to audition for Siddhartha?

My last theater production before Siddhartha was in 2004. So, when my good friend Jude Gitamondoc introduced this project to me months before this was officially opened for auditions, I promised to myself that I will do the auditions not even considering the soon-to-be conflicts on my work schedule! That was how much I missed theater arts!

3. What did you feel when you were chosen to take on the Princess Yasodhara role?

THEATER ARTS is the "love of my life". I enjoy every single time I'm on it. Whether I am an actor or one of the production crew ---- it all feels the same for me. But when I knew that I will be playing Yasodhara for the Taiwan shows, I was really excited yet the pressure of meeting everyone's expectations was even more overwhelming. I felt that it was slowly taking over my creativity but I was so fortunate to have a very good director --- Miss Daisy Baad and a very supportive Siddhartha family. They were all there --- they gave me the push to give it my best.

4. Have you had any musical experience prior to this?

I have been a part of several local theater productions, in which I have been privileged to do almost every aspect of theater arts --- from being an usherette, selling tickets, as house manager, as a sets and props staff, doing the makeup for the casts, production manager and actor. All these have empowered me in so many ways!

Benjie Layos has been playing the role of Siddhartha for the 18 performances we've had since July 2007 . Here's your first glimpse of this charming, good looking guy who has won the hearts of many.

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I'm a free spirited person. I love to explore things and traveling is one of my passions. I want to go to places that this world can offer and enjoy its breathtaking sceneries. I'm a graduate of Bachelors of Science in Physical Therapy but I can say that music (or singing) has been in my veins since I first learned my ABC's, that's way ahead before I studied my basic human anatomy.

I grew up with a very fun loving, enthusiastic, music oriented family. A sanguine guy, I always look at the bright side knowing that each day of my life is a gift...that's why it's called PRESENT.

2. Why did you audition for Siddhartha?

Being a stage play actor was one of my dreams since I was a child. But I never had the chance to be part of any play before since I didn't know anybody working in this industry. Siddhartha came in a very unexpected way. I was supposed to audition for another play (which I saw in posters all over Ayala mall) but sadly I missed it because I was too coward to audition. So I was a bit down for the entire week thinking I may have missed my chance of being a stage play actor. But then I received a text message from a friend asking me if I was interested to join a musical play. So this time without hesitation I said yes. And thus my magical journey to Siddhartha started.

Oh yes, and my audition was so funny. I was asked to sing classical songs, do some groovy dance moves with praise song as background music. But I think I did something right because I got the role of Prince Siddhartha. Not bad for a first timer, right? Hehehe

3. Have you had any musical theater experience prior to this?

No, except for those plays inside the classroom during high school or college years. I also did some acting in front of the camera for short films on local tv. I am a certified amateur in the theater industry and Siddhartha was responsible for starting me off in the theater world.

4. What did you feel when you were chosen to be Siddhartha?

The feeling was so intense, it was like winning the jackpot on the lottery. After the audition, I went back home with a very big smile on my face with all the excitement that I am about to experience and fascinated with the magic of it all. But then when I was in bed that night, I was suddenly hit by the reality that I need to really work hard since I was playing not just any ordinary role but the LEAD ROLE, THE MAJOR ROLE! Waaaaaa! Honestly, that scared me big time and I was not able to sleep. But it was also my dream so I was determined to work hard since it was my first "serious" experience in theater.

Hi, I'm Michelle Simtoco, production manager of Siddhartha musical.

I work with Ms. Daisy Ba-ad (the director) together with the rest of the creative team, crew and around fifty cast members in this production -- Siddhartha: A Musical Journey to Enlightenment.

It has been a beautiful experience for us to have been part of this magnificent play. Siddhartha: A Musical Journey to Enlightenment
is an original production by Chu Un Temple, Buddha’s Light International Association, Philippines Cebu Chapter & Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order headed by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.

The Origins of Fo Guang Shan

In 1967, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, established Fo Guang Shan on a mountain-top bamboo forest in Dashu, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. His aim was to achieve the following objectives: to propagate Buddhism through culture, to foster talent through education, to benefit society through charitable programs and to purify human minds through Buddhist practice.

In 1992, the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) was founded in Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles, USA, to combine the strength of the monastic community and lay practitioners in order to work as a team in the promotion of Humanistic Buddhism. To date, 194 branch temples and 170 BLIA regional chapters have been established worldwide, to put into practice the following ideals: render service to the community, purify people's minds and build a Pure Land on earth.
